Unified Vaporware

In October of 2012 (a little over 2 years ago), the current people ruining, err…., I mean, running ICE released Unified Rolemaster in a beta format. Well, they released 3 of the supposedly 5 core books in that month. But what has happened since then?

Shortly after they were released, I wrote some reviews. Yes, they were very critical reviews, but then again, Rolemaster is and always has been, and always will be, one of my all time favorite games. I originally broke the news about the so-called upcoming revision in April 2012. ICE announced it the next month, most likely because I had spilled the beans on them before they were ready.

And from a comment made to me by John Seal (I had, at the time, been trying to get the rights to republish Rolemaster Express and the Express Additions (without any right to create new material — just to keep those in circulation, since folks WERE requesting them – which I was denied because “ICE/TGP had big plans in the works”), I got the impression that they likely had been working on the revision for quite a while at that point (April), possibly even since they took over in October of 2010.

Then comes October 2012, and ICE releases 3 of the 5 books announced, along with an announcement that the other two would be released in Beta within a couple of months…. months…..

It has now been over 2 years since they were released. From my understanding, they are now planning on combining Character Law and Arms Law into a single book, but all you ever get from ICE is monthly announcements that “we are still working on things”

Which I find completely hilarious because when I am working on a project, I tend to send properly page-made drafts to my playtesters every couple of weeks… weeks, not years between drafts…

Even when I first released Novus as a Beta, I was putting out a new version about once a month or every other month at most.

And since Rolemaster has so much more too it, I would expect maybe 3 months as the minimum time frame between playtest/beta versions, maybe as much as 6 months if real life gets in the way too much. And it isn’t like every single book must be redone from scratch.

But 2+ years?

It begs the question……

Is the Unified Rolemaster nothing more than vaporware?

And just out of curiosity, what ever happened to the HARP project, Something Wicked? Nick Caldwell was supposedly writing it for well over a year before Mjolnir lost the ICE license in 2010 (Mjolnir never received a manuscript), and it has yet to appear. So, we are talking more than 5 years that it has been “in the works”. I guess that it is well and truly vaporware as well….
