Rampant Egos
« on: January 24, 2022, 07:39:51 AM »
I tend to have issues with people that come across as being stuck up in general.  I tend to have a greater sense of umbrage when it comes to game designers who do the same thing.

Back in the hey day of D&D 3.5, this quirk of my personality came to the front when I saw Monte Cook do it by plastering his name on his game books, as if he was the eb all, end all of D&D. And yes, that attitude got me in trouble from time to time.

But thatdidn't change the fact that I think ANY game designer who plastered his name on the cover of his products. The only time I have encountered this without it bothering me was Stave Jackson Games, but that is because (after some introspection on why) it is the name of his company.

But when it came to Cook, his company was called Malhavoc Press, but he plastered "Monte Cook Presents" on everything. Another such asshat is NIcholas HM Caldwell who plasters his name across the cover of HARP SF, in a font almost as large as the title of the book.

To me, that it nothing but arrogance and ego at work. And trust me, he does have an ego, thinking that he is better than everybody else. Of course, I have other animus against him since it was he and Thom Jones (brother-in-law of John Seal, owner of the ICE products) who went behind Mjolnir's back to bad mouth us in order to steal the license and interfere with Mjolnir's product plans, which would have possibly revived Rolemaster. Instead they took over ICE (which cost me my job at the time), and now Rolemaster has been under revision for 12 years now, and it is even more complicated than anybody ever thought it was, and it requires such a huge buy in that it will never again become a popular game, except for the few grognards who still play it.
